Further Information about the National Water Hygiene Scheme (NWHS).

It is an educational program developed in collaboration with all UK drinking water companies to ensure the protection of public health and promote good water hygiene practices. The scheme requires individuals entering clean water sites or working on the clean water network, known as ‘Restricted Operations’, to hold a National Water Hygiene EUSR registration. This includes working on service reservoirs, water pumping stations, water treatment works, wells, springs, boreholes, as well as working on the network of water mains and service pipes. The scheme consists of four modules: the importance of water, water as a carrier of disease, potential contamination and its consequences, and preventing contamination. Since 2023 the NWH scheme consists of face-to-face training, remote/e-classroom training, and e-learning/e-assessment programs. All NWH training is assessed through a multiple-choice question test. The test contains 25 questions and the pass mark is 22. Once you have successfully completed your National Water Hygiene training and assessment (and the essential Health Declaration stating that have not contracted diseases such as Typhoid, Dysentery and Cholera in the last year), you will understand the vital part you play in maintaining clean and safe drinking water and protecting public health.
